

Toyhood - An Essay In the pilot episode, my parents share equal screen time. Mom has her back to the camera, hair permed into a controlled sphere, doing dishes at the sink and talking to me off camera in a sweet, but not matronizing, voice. Mom was never one for baby talk-she respected my childhood but respected herself, too. The image of her wearing a yellow turtleneck under a knitted raspberry vest still sticks in my mind out of sheer hilarity, because, I mean, seriously: what is that?
